Meet Our Staff

Joe Refermat

Founder and Co- Owner

In 2003, Joe Refermat wanted to own a family business. After experiencing a paint your own pottery studio in Pheonix, AZ, it sparked an idea to bring this type of family-friendly location to Waukesha, WI. A Touch of Glaze opened its doors after 6 months of planning.

"After 11 years, I still enjoy helping the kids during an A Touch of Glaze birthday party. They are always so excited to be here."

MJ Povlich

Anni Pronschinske

Ruby

About Us

Turn something white into a thing of delight!

A Touch of Glaze is a new type of ceramic studio for people of all ages to come in and paint a piece of bisque (unfinished pottery).

We have 140+ pieces for you to choose from. You simply select what you would like and let our staff get it for you.

Look through our idea books, stamps, stencils, and browse our non-toxic, food-safe glazes to get ideas on how to decorate your piece. There's no extra charge for glaze or taking your time.

Once you've finished your "pottery masterpiece," then you leave it with us for 3 or 4 days to be overglazed and fired to 1808 degrees in our kiln. On your pick up date just bring your receipt back to A Touch of Glaze and take home your bright, unique work-of-art. It makes a great gift for any occasion because it's fun, creative, and uniquely yours. No artistic skill is needed and our friendly staff will give you as much help or as little help as you need.

PRICES

Our pottery selection ranges in price from $2.99 to $60, with the majority being in the $8 to $25 range. Unlike other studios that charge you more for colors, firing, or studio time, we use an all-inclusive pricing system, so the price you see on the price tag is what you pay (not including sales tax).

EXPERIENCE

A Touch of Glaze is designed with everyone from the seasoned artist to the people who might need a little inspiration or help. We have idea books, stamps, stencils, tracing paper, and a knowledgeable staff that is waiting to offer assistance. No experience is necessary. The time here is about fun and creating a unique work of art.

TIME IT TAKES
How long it takes depends on the piece of pottery and the design you've chosen. The more intricate the piece and detailed the design, the longer it will take. On average we tell people about 1 to 2 hours. Then it takes us about 3 to 4 days to cover it in a clear glaze and fire it in our kilns. After that you can come pick it up and take it home to enjoy. If you need something right away, we also offer gift certificates.

NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED
No appointment is necessary for individuals and small groups. For larger groups and parties (6 or more) we recommend booking ahead of time. Visit our parties page to find out more about our group rates and how parties work.

Melinda Burger

Founder and Co-Owner

After graduating from the University of Whitewater with a degree in fine arts and education, Melina Burger was looking for a way to combine her love of art and teaching. Founding A Touch of Glaze with her son-in-law seemed like just that type of opportunity.

"I believe art is important for everyone to experience. That is what makes coming to work each day a pleasure."
